Green Gwynedd School Congratulated by Environment Minister
Green Gwynedd School Congratulated by Environment Minister

Environment Minister Jane Davidson, visited Ysgol y Traeth in Barmouth, Gwynedd to congratulate it on its innovative approach to reducing its carbon footprint.

Earlier this year the school installed its own wind turbine and solar panels to allow it to produce some of its own electricity as well as sell some back to the national grid.

Ms Davidson said: ‘Installing the solar panels and the wind turbine at the school is a pioneering, but very practical way to save energy, save money and reduce the school's carbon footprint.

‘Ysgol y Traeth is leading the way to a future in which everyone in Wales can take advantage of the natural resources which are all around us.’

The school has already achieved the Silver Award in the global Eco-Schools programme which is an initiative that encourages pupils to engage with environmental and sustainable development issues. The Eco-Schools programme plays a vital role in educating young people to make a major contribution to Assembly Government priorities on tackling climate change, global citizenship, recycling and reducing waste.
