Cynnal Cymru – Sustain Wales Statement in Response to the Planned Closure of the SDC
"We are saddened and concerned by the announcement made by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) (22 July 2010) about the withdrawal of funding from the UK Sustainable Development Commission (SDC). “The SDC has played a vital scrutiny and advisory role to the UK government and devolved administrations. It has advocated placing sustainability at the centre of government and has been responsible for seminal pieces of work, including 'Redefining Prosperity,' 'Nuclear Power in a Low Carbon Economy,' 'Prosperity without Growth' and 'I Will if You Will.' “Sustainable development is the only solution that can address the escalating challenges of climate change, resource security and economic and social wellbeing. We urge the UK government to recognise this and respond accordingly when it puts its new arrangements in place. “Cynnal Cymru will work closely with the Welsh Assembly Government and SDC to assess the implications for Wales. We will continue to work with our partners and stakeholders to make sustainable development the central organising principle of governance and business in Wales.” Read the SDC's response Contact: Roz Robinson on 029 2019 2021 or email roz@cynnalcymru.com Back |
