The sights and sounds of Wales are set to take centre stage at one of the major festivals in the United States this summer and here at Cynnal Cymru - Sustain Wales we’re very excited.
On 22nd June, we'll be going to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C. for 2 weeks! We will be raising awareness of many of the exciting and innovative projects going on across Wales via a photo exhibition and the Convergence on Zero lecture at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History with the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT).
The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is an annual, cultural festival run by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, a research and educational unit of the Smithsonian Institution.
This year Wales will be the featured nation at the festival, which takes place annually on the National Mall in Washington, for 10 days at the end of June and the beginning of July.
The main theme of Wales’ programme at the event will be sustainability. Organisations from across Wales, including CAT and Cynnal Cymru – Sustain Wales, have been invited to Washington to show the commitment to sustainability and share best practice.
Being invited to be guest nation at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2009 brings opportunities to forge links and partnerships between Wales and Washington DC across all sectors and to raise Wales’ profile as a leader on sustainability.
The programme for the Festival will draw on the diversity of Wales’ cultural life, from the strength of deep-rooted traditions through to innovative new technologies. Over one hundred individual practitioners, performers and presenters from Wales will participate in the Festival. For further information visit: www.wales.com/smithsonian.
The Wales Green List
Cynnal Cymru - Sustain Wales has been hard at work putting together a photographic exhibition of Welsh sustainability champions to take to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C. The list includes inspiring people from community groups, business, politics, education and academia!
Upon our return from Washington, the photographic exhibition will tour Wales. We will also be putting together a full Green List comprising 52 leaders from all sections of society.
The Green 52 will be published later this year and will be publicised in the media and online. Keep an eye on our website to see if a project you're aware of is featured and to find out when the exhibition will be shown in a venue near you!
