Sustainable living survey

Last summer, at the Royal Welsh Show, we conducted a pilot survey to find out just how easy or difficult it is to live sustainably in Wales.

174 people took part in the survey over four days, and ten areas of sustainability were examined including travel, energy, shopping and the natural environment.

81% of respondents said that there were not enough opportunities and services to help them live sustainably in Wales.

The number of people who took part in the survey did not give us a wide enough sample to be statistically valid but, nonetheless, this is an important initial indication that many people believe that there are not enough opportunities to enable them to make these sustainable choices - e.g. access local food, public transport, and recycling.

With more and more emphasis being put on the need for people to 'do their bit', this research shows that there we could be asking people to do things that just aren't possible where they live. However, with further research, we may discover that there is simply a lack of awareness of services in some parts of Wales.

This year Cynnal Cymru-Sustain Wales will carry out a Wales-wide version of the survey, and will also do research into the services that exist across Wales, enabling us to establish how easy or difficult it really is to live sustainably in different parts of Wales.
