Guide to the topics

Energy

In light of climate change, energy efficiency and renewable forms of energy are increasingly important to meet our growing demands.

Natural Environment

Our native flora and fauna need protecting and nurturing for our enjoyment and for future generations to come. This includes the environment and landscape in which they live.

Recycling and Waste

At the rate we consume in the western world it is important that waste is recycled to avoid being sent to landfill, where it might not break down for hundreds of years. The materials we throw away can often be re-used for something else. Remember: reduce, re-use, repair and recycle.

Building and Construction

There is growing demand in the building and construction industry to find new ways of working using more sustainable methods and materials which minimise their impact on the planet.

Health

Sustaining our people is just as important as sustaining the environment we live in! There are many projects and initiatives to encourage us to stay healthy and fit and to provide sound advice.

Food and Drink

How it was grown, how it was traded, how far it has travelled - there’s much more to food and drink than the taste alone, for instance organic, fair trade, and fresh & healthy seasonal food to name a few.

Agriculture

Many of Wales ’ rural communities are largely dependant on agriculture and with the changing climate and economy the industry is undergoing many changes towards more sustainable agriculture for instance through new grant schemes.

Woodlands

Our woodlands are part of our heritage. We need to maintain them for our enjoyment, for future generations and for the eco-systems that they support. Many Welsh woodland areas are now sustainably managed.

Gardening and Allotments

Growing your own is a quick and easy way to fresh and low-cost fruit and vegetables. If you don’t have a garden an allotment is an ideal alternative.

Home and Shopping

The way we shop and the amount we buy has many implications on sustainability. We should all consider where our goods have come from, what they are made of, how much packaging there is and whether it can be recycled.

Community

Sustainable communities are the backbone of a sustainable nation. Many Welsh communities are working hard to create better places for their inhabitants.

Social Justice

Sustainability is grounded in the belief that everyone has their part to play and a contribution to make to create an inclusive society with equality of opportunity and eradicate poverty once and for all.

Culture and Language

We can take pride in our own cultural identity while embracing the differences and similarities between us in the diverse nation that we are fast becoming.

Economy and Money

Economic stability is integral to sustainability and is considered one of the three major building blocks to sustainable development, along with the environment and society.

Tourism and Leisure

Have a great time on your holidays and days out but do it with a little thought. Think about how you travel - perhaps consider the working conditions of those working in the tourism industry here and abroad and minimise the impact you leave behind.

Transport and Travel

Do we really need to take the car every time? There are numerous benefits to taking alternatives, particularly with rising fuel costs and carbon emissions. Walking and cycling are great ways to travel, to get some exercise and help reduce stress, and to save the planet and our pennies!

Technology

The solutions to some of our biggest challenges - for example, our energy needs or information needs - may already be there or, at least, are on the verge of being developed. It’s a world of discovery!

Sustainability

Some organisations or projects work right across the spectrum of sustainability and approach it from every angle, like Sustainwales.com for instance.
