carrier bag charge campaign

On 1 October 2011, Wales became the first UK country to introduce a charge for single use carrier bags.

The purpose of the charge is to reduce the number of single-use carrier bags being used in Wales, and the resultant environmental problems.

This BBC Quiz gives a good idea of how the charge will be used. The Welsh Government also has developed a carrier bag charge website with further information for consumers and retailers.

The money raised from the charge will not go to the Welsh Government; but the Government is encouraging retailers to pass the money from the charge onto local environmental projects.

Are you aware of any good projects in your local area which have plans to work together with retailers to ensure the charge is put to good use? If you have an environmental project, why not approach your local retailers to see if you could work together? If you are aware of a project which is working with retailers around the charge, let us know about them and we will publicise the good work!
